TerraClassicUSD (USTC) is a decentralized stablecoin originally designed to maintain a stable value of 1 US dollar. Its objective was to provide a reliable medium of exchange and store of value within the Terra ecosystem. USTC was created by Terraform Labs, a company led by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin. USTC's unique mechanism was based on an algorithmic approach. Through a "mint-and-burn" process, USTC could be exchanged for the ecosystem's governance token, LUNA (now LUNC). If the price of USTC rose above $1, users could burn LUNC to mint USTC, which would exert downward pressure on its price. Conversely, if the price fell below $1, users could burn USTC to mint LUNC, intended to drive USTC's price back up. However, this mechanism proved to be unstable.
